CAREY LANDRY
After a week of nonstop online meetings and presentations, I have to say that I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be able to attend the NPM National Convention, even if it was online. The coronavirus may stop us from meeting in person, but it can’t stop our zeal for our faith community! I miss everything about the trip except the heat, and I’m very grateful that Devin and I have several window A/C units to keep us cool. I will be including a lot of what I learned from the convention in my music plans for this coming year, so please look forward to that!
This week, let’s look at Carey Landry, a well-known Catholic composer who has been especially influential with children. He was born in 1944, and received his master’s degree in Theology from the Catholic university of America. He was ordained a priest in 1971, and was a campus minister at the Louisiana State University at Eunice. During this time, Landry composed six collections of songs and was a popular presenter for Catholic youth ministry. You would know some of his works, including ‘Hail Mary: Gentle Woman’ and ‘Only a Shadow.’ Clergy ministry would not end up being his calling, and after leaving the priesthood, Landry would marry his musician friend Carol Jean Kinghorn-Landry. Together they created ‘Hi God,’ a series of songs meant for inviting children into the faith, and this program has been going strong for over forty years. Carey and his wife are both hospital chaplains, and liturgical music coordinators at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Indianapolis.

As you may have heard during announcements, I am looking for volunteer singers and musicians age 15 and up! (I make exceptions for talented children.) If you have ever wanted to get involved with the Music Ministry, but never had the time, this is the chance for you! I am looking for those who would be interested in singing or playing a church appropriate solo for the prelude of the 4.pm, 9.30am, and 11.30am masses during the summer season. Types of musicianship includes: vocal solos or duets, violin pieces, or a piano song, and so on! I am not so much looking for a certain type of music, as long as it is sacred in nature.
Slots are filling up fast, so please contact me via email or in the choir loft after mass on the weekends to secure a date. Thank you so much!
